Red Kite spotted over the village
- R (16th Apr 2014 - 00:18:35)

Really excited to have spotted a beautiful Red Kite the other day. Have seen it before, being mobbed by some crows.

Could easily mistake it with some of the Buzzards around the village, but the Red Kite has the distinctive V tail. Hope we get more of them.

Glad someone else has seen one! Saw one over the infant school a couple of weeks ago - very exciting!

Nice to see that they are spreading our way finally.

There is a major conservation program being undertaken in the Chilterns near Stokenchurch.

Many of the birds can often be seen from the M40 between J5 & J6.

Red kite also spotted over the old A3 past Rake as reported before, not sure why my posting on here was removed?!?!?!

Yesterday i heard the first cuckoo this year.
The swallows are already paired up.

I reckoned I saw a red kite above the Headley Road / Longmoor Road part of the village on 27 June, afternoon. One can frequently see the buzzards soaring above this locality but feel sure it was a kite on this occasion. Sadly I haven't heard owls calling in this locality for decades; I suspect the headlights from the A3 bypass were the last straw in this locality but I'm much hoping to be pleasantly surprised one night. Here's hoping !

Red Kites are beautiful birds and will be a welcome addition to our local wildlife.....

...... but oh dear, animal lovers will be very conflicted, unfortunately Red kites are known to kill pigeons !!!

.. and Badgers! lol.

There are two pairs of Red Kites around East Meon. You can walk across the Downs and are often be greeted by a Red Kite flying along side you. A lovely sight.

We have some great photos which I will share here when I get a moment.

If you ever fancy a walk around East Meon then there is always the Issak Walton for food & refreshments afterwards. :-)

Julian.

A red kite seen over Bramshott last week and at the weekend - really great to see.

Red kites rarely kill anything, and certainly aren't physically capable of killing anything much larger than a pigeon. They mostly eat carrion, which is why you'll so often see them over the M40, where they feed on road kill.

It seems like we'll be seeing them more and more often.. I saw one over Godalming a couple of years ago, and it looks like they are moving down along the A3, using the motorways as a corridor for range expansion.

Look forward to seeing my first one in Liphook.

Carrion refers to the carcass of a dead animal

I saw a red kite flying very low through the Square this Saturday. I have spotted them up near Guildford several times but this was the first time I have spotted one around here. Great to see!

Red kites are nesting on liphook golf course, have seen them frequently over the last few months.

I am so pleased this post was started, as the other day I shouted to my husband "look, look there’s a red kite" and now I know I wasn't seeing things.
My garden backs on to Lowsley farm and the Kite flew right over my garden then back out to the field. xx

I wanted to respond to Andy's earlier comment regarding owls as I heard one about a week ago in the early hours of the morning. It called for a good 15 minutws or so and was certainly the first time I'd heard one since moving here nearly 15 years ago. I live just off the Headley Road.

We hear owls regularly in Griggs Green.

:-)

Used to hear owls quite regularly when we lived close to the centre of Liphook. Only moved quite recently so I expect they are still there! There were also bats (about this time of year) and hedgehogs.

Living on the Churchers end of Midhurst Rd, I can hear a pair of tawny owls calling to each other pretty much every night... They haven't been calling lately as the breeding season is over, and they will be moulting at the moment, so not feeling their best.

They should start calling again in August / September though, when their moult is over.

Also heard owls the other night - assumed coming from Radford Park or thereabouts.

Regularly see what I thought was a buzzard when out with dog round Bramshott, Lowsley fields and Concord. Will Google red kite and look more carefully in future!

As I write (1.15pm Saturday 11th July ), there are two beautiful Red Kites flying over Radford Park, they seem to be circling on the thermals. They are flying quite low and are easy to identify. .

Hope they are taking up residency here.

Just sitting in Sainsbury cafe and saw out the window a Kite soaring over the houses. Lovely to see them about, hope they stay, although with all the green spaces being built on soon they might not be able to.

We hear Parrotts every morning and evening in The Avenue!

A red kite was circling above our garden a few days ago - a wonderful sight. We don't get many birds visiting our garden but to see this so close/low was brilliant!
