Litter dumping.
- Boris (18th Apr 2014 - 12:18:49)

Whilst waiting for the number 13 bus at the stop opposite the Co Op I noticed a huge amount of rubbish (cold drink tins, take away food containers etc) had been dumped over a small wall and behind a hedge of a residents garden next to the bus stop.

The rubbish is being dumped by persons waiting for the bus.

The amount of dumped rubbish runs the whole length of the wall and would fill a number of large refuse bags.
I doubt if the resident is aware of it, as it is between a hedge and the wall.

Any civic minded folk out there who would be prepared to join me in cleaning it up, Rotary perhaps?

If so, post a reply and a date and time and we will get stuck in.

A long term solution would be for a length of chicken wire to be fixed to the top of the small wall to prevent rubbish being dumped over it.

I am with you on this!
Another place that is always full of rubbish is the layby at the top of Longmoor Road. There is a bin there but it is always over flowing.
I don't mind helping you Boris to clean up the rubbish in the elderly persons garden.

The best answer would be to ask EHDC or the local parish team to put a litter bin there on the post and that should avoid future issues.

Don't forget these litter dumpers are more than likely children and you have to make things easy for them these days so a bin in arms reach should work.

What about the terrible littering in the woodland adjacent to the Royal Anchor pub car park? And the Royal School underpass?
We better get used to it.
Cuts in the public spending (to pay off fat cats), and social integration (multi-culture communities)....

I know the house you are talking about, I often clear the mess up as the secondary school age kids who wait for the bus, chuck their rubbish into my garden also. The wall is used solely for sitting on, jumping on and being pushed off whilst they wait. Not to mention the shouting and vile language!!

There was, possibly still is a bin, by the end house nearest the fish and chip shop.

Thank you for the offer of help, I'm sure the lady would be most grateful, but it would be daily, rather than a one off!!

It's been an on going problem for many years, I can't see it changing any time soon!!

Would it be an idea to contact the relevant schools to get them to speak to the children en masse about the need to keep our country tidy? Perhaps then, in time, litter might be a thing of the past. A note to the parents at the same time might kill two birds with one stone!

I don't think they are school aged kids, they are college kids I believe.....

Hi Rachel. Thanks for your offer to help.
Are you ok for this saturday afternoon from 2.30?
Please say yes or no on this forum.
I know it is probably a waste of time doing this because it will not be long before it is back in the same mess as before, but if its not tackled it will attract rats.
There is a dust bin next to the bus stop, and two wheelie bins as well, but I guess walking two paces is just too much for some people to go to dump their rubbish, and its "cool" to dump it in somebodys garden.

On Sunday morning I cleared three full bags of fetid rubbish from the front garden in the Headley Road (see above)

The number of Red Bull and other high octane drink cans indicated just who was responsible for this mess.

This evening I checked the garden and sure enough more litter had been dropped behind the wall including a partly consumed baguette.

So, if this continues, there will be rats in that area of the Headley Road.

Boris I am so so sorry, I didn't read your message in time, only just picked it up! I am serious about helping with litter picking. I have thought one day I might just go out with a black bag and a pair of rubber gloves and pick up as I walk!

Re: Litter dumping.
- Boris (29th Apr 2014 - 15:08:14)

Autolycus, thank you for a job well done.
I went up on monday morning to get stuck in and got a great surprise to see the area was spotless. Once again very many thanks.

Yes, with continued dumping in this area there is a great risk of vermin being attracted.

If chicken wire was fixed to the top of the wall it might possibly stop people from dumping, but then again they might just throw rubbish further into the garden. I wonder how many of the people who dump rubbish in this area are still wearing nappies to school?

Rachel, it seems to be an ongoing problem, and as Autolycus removed three large bags, if you are going to pick up whatever rubbish you see you will need a wheelbarrow for the bags.

Sadly it seems to be a sign of the times.

What I find perplexing is that there is an empty litter bin just three feet away from the spot in question.

Thanks Autolycus on behalf of the section of the local population who have got past the first stage of intentionality, I saw you at your altruistic work and the trifles you were picking up were not unconsidered or inconsiderable ! If I knew you a pint or a bottle of your favourite would be on me !
