news from rural france
- karen (3rd Jun 2012 - 22:40:41)

I arrived in France on friday, only to find the road outside our house had signs warning of loose chippings! Great, thought I'd left those behind in Liphook. I have to tell you all, even though Saturday's temperature was in excess of 30 degrees, no melted tar, no flying chippings or great clouds of dust. The lane is a single track, used by some very large farm vehicles and the job that has been done is excellent as far as I can see, even though the locals complained that it took them nearly two whole days to complete a stretch of about 2 miles, with only 4 men. How long did it take in Liphook and how many men and machines.

Should I now mention that the verges are kept mown, even here in the most rural of villages.

There is weekly collection of rubbish usually before 7 am by dustmen that sing as they do there work.

The ditches are dug and kept clear so when the heavy rain falls the roads don't flood.

If you need to see a Doctor turn up at the surgery and wait your turn, you will always be seen. Should you be unfortunate enough to need to see a consultant and are unable to get to the hospital, he will come to you!

All this for a fraction of the cost of our council tax.

I am a life long Liphook resident, as was my father, father's father etc. etc., but what is happening to our village? I'll shut up now but one last thing before I sign of the wine is cheap and very good too!

P.S. Can't see the French paying out thousands to a jumped up parish clerk either!! Off with his head!!

Many fair points indeed, most of which - if not all - apply to the UK as a whole, not just Liphook.
